It’s an important part of our schtick here at Book Post that we partner up with bookstores around the country so we can participate in our nation’s book cultures and share their news. Alas as with so much the pandemic has put a stop to the travelling Book Post Road Show. But we are very grateful that our current partner, Malaprop’s Bookstore/Cafe in Asheville, NC, (read my post about our partnership) has thrown open their virtual doors and given us a chance to settle into their comfy e-chairs and conjure an evening in their cheerful spaces: this Thursday, October 29th, at 6 PM.
We are doubly grateful to be able to talk with Calvin Baker about his timely new book, A More Perfect Reunion: Race, Integration, and the Future of America. After writing four novels steeped in the experience of the American past and present, Calvin felt driven to convey an urgent message in no uncertain—i.e., nonfictional—terms: that only with full integration can the US fulfill its promise of freedom and equality. Destiny landed his book on our doorsteps in June of 2020. Join us as we talk with him about the implications of his call, the events that have followed it, how literary writers participate in the real world of their time, and what integration asks of us as readers and citizens.
Calvin is the author of Grace, Dominion, Once Two Heroes, Naming the World, and A More Perfect Reunion. He reviewed David Blight’s Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom for Book Post in 2019 and we featured a chapter on hip-hop from A More Perfect Reunion in Book Post last June.
Please share this invitation and encourage others to join us! Bring your wine or coke in a plastic cup as we summon the book-event experience of old and work to envision a truly inclusive book culture right in virtual North Carolina, home of the first Woolworth’s sit-in.
