In 1786, the State of Georgia purchased Austin Dabney’s freedom and granted him 250 acres of land in recognition for his bravery and service in the Revolutionary War, the only such grant by the state to an enslaved soldier. Sean Hill was born and grew up not far away in the small town of Milledgeville.
