I understand that virtual events are a lot of work for less reward and that this is a time when indie bookstores need to conserve their energy in order to survive. But as a poet with a chapbook coming out shortly, I am concerned that after an initial flurry of online readings, they are becoming less frequent. I don't know how else to promote my book effectively. Will bookstores be willing to hold in-person events for less recent books once we can gather together again?
What I good question! I imagine they will. I do think that if you made a relationship with a bookstore near you, or somehow connected to you or your interests, and put in the work to bring an audience for a virtual event they might be willing to sponsor it. Perhaps team up with a couple of other recent-chapbook authors? If you send them signed bookplates or sign physical copies for them they can benefit from online sales tied to the event.
